Animation Fundamentals (NCII Part 1)

This foundational course introduces the core concepts and tools for time-based media, crucial for the Animation NCII. We begin with the History and 12 Principles of Animation , transitioning into practical application using Adobe Photoshop for frame-by-frame animation (GIFs). The course culminates in an introduction to Adobe After Effects, mastering keyframing and basic Motion Graphics to prepare students for visual effects work.

What Will You Learn?

  • Explain the History of Animation and the significance of early pioneers and various animation types.
  • Master and apply the 12 Principles of Animation (e.g., Squash and Stretch, Timing) to create believable motion.
  • Utilize Adobe Photoshop's timeline to create simple image editing, GIFs, and frame-by-frame animations (e.g., a bouncing ball).
  • Plan and structure an animated project using Character Design, Storyboarding, and Screenwriting.
  • Navigate the Adobe After Effects interface, set up compositions, and understand non-destructive keyframing.
  • Create basic Motion Graphics using shape layers, text animations, effects, and parenting in After Effects.

This module provides the essential theoretical foundation of animation, covering its history, various types, and the crucial 12 Principles that govern all movement, regardless of the software used.

Module 2: Frame-by-Frame and Animation Planning
Students will apply their knowledge to create simple frame-by-frame motion using the Photoshop timeline. This module also focuses on the crucial pre-production steps of character design and story planning.

Module 3: Introduction to After Effects and Motion Graphics
This module introduces the industry-standard software for motion graphics, Adobe After Effects. Students will master the composition-based workflow, non-linear animation using keyframes, and creation of basic animated elements.

Module 4: Practical Visual Effects (VFX) Skills
The final module introduces essential VFX techniques that bridge motion graphics and live-action integration, including key tasks like masking, motion tracking, and basic compositing (green screen).
