Visual Graphic Design Fundamentals: Principles, Branding, and Practical Application (NCII)

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles of Visual Graphic Design (VGD), focusing on creating professional, static visual communications. We move beyond basic elements to explore advanced layout, typography, color psychology, and branding fundamentals. Students will apply theory directly by creating essential marketing materials using industry-standard tools (Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator).

  • Design a complete Tri-Fold Brochure as a major capstone project.

Course Content

Module 1: Core Elements and Fundamentals
This module is the theoretical backbone of VGD, focusing on the fundamental components used in every design: line, shape, texture, typography, and color. Students will learn the psychological impact of color and the science of readable type.

Module 2: Layout, Composition, and Structure
This module teaches students how to arrange content to guide the viewer's eye. It focuses on professional techniques like using grids, alignment, and mastering white space to create organized, scannable layouts for both print and screen.

Module 3: Branding and Identity
Students will learn the essential components of a brand identity. This module covers the difference between a logo and a brand, introduces effective design principles for logo creation, and culminates in a group critique of original student work.

Module 4: Production and Output
The final module covers the technical steps needed to transition a design from screen to real-world output. It focuses on file formats, print requirements (bleeds, CMYK), and applying all skills to a standard marketing piece.
